Overcoming Performance Anxiety: Tools for Young Athletes

Pressure is part of the game, but for young athletes, that pressure can sometimes feel overwhelming. At A3 Sports Performance, we work with youth athletes to not only develop their performance, but also their minds. Because athletic success starts in your head long before it shows up on the scoreboard.

What Is Performance Anxiety?

Performance anxiety is the fear of underperforming in a high-pressure situation. Like tryouts, games, or even training in front of others. It can show up as:

  • Racing heart or shallow breathing
  • Doubt or negative self-talk
  • Freezing under pressure or making uncharacteristic mistakes
  • Avoiding competition altogether

Our On-the-Floor Mental Strategies

1. Controlled Breathing Techniques
You can regulate your nervous system with simple box breathing or 4-7-8 breathing. A few focused breaths before a lift or drill can shift you from “fight or flight” to focused and calm.

2. Visualization Before Movement
Before a big sprint, jump, or rep, try to close your eyes, picture yourself doing it successfully, and then execute. This trains the mind and body to respond with confidence, not fear.

3. Reframing Self-Talk
“Don’t mess up” becomes “I’ve got this.” Negative thoughts are replaced with powerful, short affirmations that are repeated during workouts and warmups. Your words and thoughts hold power, make them positive!

4. Pressure Simulation Drills
We coach athletes through situations that mimic high-stakes moments, adding time constraints, surprise switches, or noise distractions to help them develop emotional resilience under pressure.

Taking your power back through conditioned practice is the best way to totally deflate performance anxiety. When your abilities and mindset match up in harmony, anxiety can’t ever touch you.
